Snowshoe and scramble
Used my snowshoes on this one. From the road we followed a trail along a drainage to treeline and then cut across snowy slopes to the impressively corniced Lougheed/Windtower col. The ridge was windswept at this point so I took off the snowshoes. The wind picked up dramatically once we hit the summit so our stay was brief. Amazing views all around. Icy on the way down until we hit the snow again.

Normal Scramble route
Ascended on one of the most beautiful blue skies days I have ever seen (and suffered severe sunburn as a result...). Postholing in snow to our hips at the forest, and bullet proof ice on the lower slopes of the Windtower. A massive cornice entertained us at the Windtower/Lougheed col. Excellent day!!

more direct hiking route
a fair bit of snow from the beginning that started at knee high and then eventually to hip height at treeline. We were quite slow in the forest with all that snow to contend with since we didn't have snowshoes. Once above treeline, the snow was crusty and even some icy spots. We put on the crampons just for fun and it actually did help us go a little faster as we struggled without it. I got to test out my soft shell jacket and Mark got to test out his soft shell pants and both worked exceptionally well. It was snowing lightly and cloudy from treeline to the summit but at least it wasn't a blowing gale as mentioned in the guidebook and from friends who have done it. Overall, I have to say it was a good day to be in the mountains and summitting after failure on Grizzly Peak last month.

Route Climbed: West ridge Date Climbed: August 21, 2004Rain then snow. Almost a complete white out all day. But hay we got to do something. A good outing with J. D. Miller and James Blench.
