You know you're a climbing beast...

When your route maps don't fit neatly into one screen view on a PC. Great TR, ZeeJay, thanks for sharing. I admire your winter journeys!

Even with one peak every winter you'll bag them all eventually!

Good luck on the next one.

Cheers, Rob

Let's see, I'm 54 now. At the rate of 1 per year, I'll be 68!!!! Not too sure about that :)

Don't sweat it. At 68, you'll STILL be younger than Dean !!!

13er Mania

Nice going, ZeeJay. The report was spot-on with riveting descriptions and a no-holds-barred approach to reality. Almost makes me want to take up skiing, but only almost! :) Keep up the good work and keep blazing those trails. Inspirational for us all are your exploits.

Tough

Good job and the climbs/attempts. Climbing all the Utah 13ers in winter would be a challenge.

I've still never heard of anyone climbing Lovenia and East Lovenia, for example, in winter. Wilson either. Ever heard of anyone climbing these in winter? Long, tough trips for sure.

Re: Tough

Other than Kings Peak, I don't know of anyone else who has climbed any of the 13000 footers in the actual winter. However, I'd bet that the peaks around Henrys Fork have all been climbed in the winter since these have the best access, but have not heard of any specifics.

I'm guessing that Mike Kelsey has climbed a few, but don't know how to find this out.

Wilson would be technically easy, but a long slog, 42 miles RT. If snow conditions are like I experienced this year it's hard to imagine doing. I'm wondering if the snow might be better in the beginning of January, as I've never been out there then, but of course then it is colder and there's less daylight. I think the Lovenias would for sure be the toughest both in terms of access and technical difficulty.

Re: Tough

Mike Kelsey has climbed Gilbert, Gunsight, Kings, South Kings, Painter and Trailrider in official winter.

In addition he has done Tokewanna and Wasatch BM in late March (officially spring) and Roberts, North Emmons, Emmons and South Emmons in April.

Of course Powell has been climbed in winter (by you guys). I've heard of several ascents of Gilbert in winter as well.

I'm wondering if the snow might be better in the beginning of January, as I've never been out there then, but of course then it is colder and there's less daylight.

I've been there in January, but we never made any summits other than Flat Top Mountain (north ridge of Powell), but then again it really isn't a real peak. January is pretty tough because the snow is pure powder and not consolidated at all. I've also been to East Fork Bear River, etc. in January.

I think the Lovenias would for sure be the toughest both in terms of access and technical difficulty.

Yes; for sure.

Good luck on your journeys. It will be interesting to see more reports on attempts. Keep up the good work!

Very admirable goals!

I haven't skied in years but always found winter camping challenging to say the least. How was that 3 season tent other than tiny? I always used a 3 season for money reasons even when camping below 32 degrees and being the only female I always had to sleep alone or carry extra weight. Not to mention my 3 season tents are partial screening (insert laugh here!)

Anyway I enjoyed reading about your plans and adventures!

Good luck! You'll make it, I'm sure!

Re: Very admirable goals!

Thanks Kathy! I think the 3 season tent is fine as long as it's not going to snow very much, otherwise it might not be sturdy enough.

Re: Well Done....

Thanks!

I did Kings Peak yesterday with the WMC and now I'm going to take it easy.

Where have you been in the Uintas?
