Thanks

Jim,

Thanks for the report. You just need to find a nice day with temps. in the 20s and the next trip will be a winner! Glad you made it back down safely.

Gloves?

Jim,

I would recommend using real mittens instead of fancy gloves in cold weather like this.
It looks to me that the weather was reasonable (you did not write anything about the wind, so I assume that it was not that bad).
So it seems that you turned back only because of inadequate gloves and boots.

Good luck with your next attempt!

Re: Gloves?

Inadequate boots for sure as the fit caused blisters and indeed my toes did start feeling a cold pinch once I got above the tree line and the wind kicked in. So I'm guessing -40F with windchill as was the prediction that day.

But as for my fingers, I was toasty all day. The only finger pain was when I was forced to remove them to get into my pack. Had I worn mittens I would have had to take them off even more. I packed a pair of leather down mittens as an emergency backup. At least with the gloves I was able to operate my camera.

These snow boarding gloves are a great system. They have little hand warmer pockets on the back and I think that helped some - but I've never been cold in these gloves even without hand warmers.
