2 1/2 great days in the Lechtal Alps
My wife and me had holidays from 04th August 2008 to 10th August 2008 and we wanted to make some nice climbs in the mountains. But as the weather was not really stable we decided to plan ad hoc.
At Monday it was really bad weather, also most of Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday were forecasted as sunny days but at Friday and the weekend again rain, rain, rain in the Alps…
So we had 2 ½ days for some climbing. We decided to drive to Ehrwald and ascent at Tuesday evening to Coburger hut and climb the via ferrata Tajakante to Vorderer Tajakopf at Wednesday. For Thursday we were thinking about Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze via the south wall.
Day 1: 05/08/2008
Tuesday morning it was raining at home. I checked the webcam of Ehrwald… rain. So some more relaxing and we started driving later. So we arrived in Ehrwald at 4.30 pm. The weather was very cloudy with some drops, but not really raining. And we could even see some mountains…
So we ascended via Seebenalm to Coburger hut. As it was relatively late and the weather was so bad that day we were alone the whole ascent. But as nearer we came to the hut the weather became “better”. “Better” means no rain, the clouds were less grey and finally we could see some mountains like Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze.
We reached the Coburger hut at 7 pm. We had luck that we got a warm dinner there as they they just wanted to close the kitchen for this evening. So we enjoyed the great dinner there and hoped for good weather for the long ridge Tajakante the next day.

Day 2: 06/08/2008
When we got up the next morning I looked out the window… No rain, no clouds – just blue sky and a rising sun… what a great panorama! A great view to Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze and Zugspitze! My heart beated faster!
Then we enjoyed breakfast and started then.
The via ferrata follows an impressing line – nearly almost at the west ridge to Vorderer Tajakopf. And always challenging with difficult passages, often vertical, 1x even lightly pendently. We had always a great view down to Seebensee with its turquoise water. So we made some breaks to enjoy the view from the ridge. Point 12.00 we reached the summit cross and shared this great viewpoint with some other climbers. Really impressing! After a longer break we started to descent. It´s also a steep way down with some wire-ropes and you have to go down really carefully because of lots of boulders.
In the evening we enjoyed a wonderful evening light and alpenglow at Zugspitze – this was one of the mountains you never forget!

Day 3: 07/08/2008

The next morning was also sunny with only a few little clouds. But for the afternoon rain was forecasted. So we decided not to climb Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze but climb Vorderer Drachenkopf.
It´s a short ascent but at the summit flank with many boulders. So it´s not a really nice ascent. When you slip at the boulders in this flank you will fall down 300 metres. So we stopped before the summit and turned back.
So we enjoyed a great Kaiserschmarrn at the hut – hhhhm, delicious!!!
And then we descended back to Ehrwald. After a short break at Seebensee were we cooled our hot feet in the cold water we made another break at Seebenalm with some drinks.
And when we reached the car in the valley it started to rain…
So we started at the right time at Tuesday, made a wonderful climb at Wednesday, had a great day at Thursday and also came back at the right moment. Overall a wonderful trip with a great via ferrata and a really lovely hut with delicious food! We will often think back at this successful and great trip!
