Wow, what a line on June 29, 2002. Josh and I had just climbed Snake Dike with 20 others. On the descent, Josh counted about 200 people on the Cables this day. I talked to some folks who said they spent an hour on the cables each way. Should the NPS open up another "lane"?

Ahem ...

... this may be called a "real" crowd. Never seen something like this.

No. If you build it, they will come. More and more and more. It must end somewhere. What an incredible picture. In a different context, this pics make the human race look downright goofy. Quite bizarre.

Re: Should the NPS open up another lane?

I remember climbing the cables a few years ago and nearly getting plowed off the mountain by a father and son team who were practically running down the route with little control, wearing smooth-soled sneakers. These were plus-sized gents, so I felt like a bowling pin as I grasped the railing tightly, watching the approaching bowling balls of doom.

It surprises me that no one has died on the cables, given the thousands of climbers who take this route every year. It is actually pretty steep and unforgiving.

Re: Should the NPS open up another lane?

I have seen more people on the cables before. A friend and I climbed Snake Dike, and went to descend the cables, and there were 4 lanes of tourists, 2 inside the cables, and 2 outside the cables, one on each side. We estimated over 1,000 people on the summit, and many, many more on the cables and trail. I don't visit here during the summer season.

why?

Think anyone would be pissed if I just went up the bloody rock and passed them all? Damned if i stand in line to use a cable.

Early bird gets the worm

This is why I usally get up around 4am on the morning I intend to go up or bag any peak for that matter. I went up in August 11th of 2007. There was 3 in my party and a total of 10 on the top. We had the cables to ourselves on the way up and down. But had to get through the crowds on the way down the trail.
