Most beauiful mountain range I've ever been to
Took eight hours from Yooko Sanso to Yarigatake Sanso where we stayed over the night. Did not ascend the last fifty meters to the top as the weather became cloudy and cold. We went down the Tengu-haira (sp?) trail that took right after a short trip on the Dai-Kiretto.
The trail up to Yarigatake Sanso is easy and well cared for and could be hiked by any novice hiker with some stamina (about 1500 meters height). The beginning of the Daikiretto/Tengu-haira trail is easy but exposed, with some ladders and chains and many drops on each side of the trail.
Kamikochi is, so far, the most amazingly beautiful mountain range that it has been my priviliege to hike in. Very recommended.

Had a great hike. 7 hours up from Kamikochi. Stayed at Yarigatake Sanso. Down the next morning. The Japan Alps are fantastic.

Yari - Hotaka traverse
Etsuko and I bagged a much coveted and acclaimed Yariga-take to Hotaka-dake traverse with a bunch of other peaks in between. We hiked 22+ km/5000' gain from Kamikochi to Yariga-take sanso on Oct 12th, ran up Yari early in the morning of the 13th and continued on the ridge to Hotaka-dake. Stayed another night in Hotaka-dake sanso on the 13th and came down via Dakesawa on the 14th. There is a certain appeal of needing only to carry your clothes, water and wallet. The rest (shelter, meals, drinks, BEER, etc.) can be acquired along the way in numerous huts. We lucked out and had wicked weather on the 12th and 13th. On the 14th all hell broke loose and mountains received a fresh layer of late season snow. Beautiful country!

Very easy and short one , 15 minutes from the refuge to the summit due to traffic on the fixed ladders.8 minutes from the summit back to the refuge.

Climbed as part of a 43 non-stop traverse from the Pacific to Japan Sea costs, taking in most of the Kita, Chuno, Minimi Alps, and Ontake.
