From carpark near Ribblehead Viaduct
Also 25 Feb 16 and 07 Mar 16. First two times anticlockwise (Whernside, Ingleborough then Pen-y-ghent) and the third clockwise (Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough then Whernside). Also hiked Whernside, Ingleborough (and Park Fell) with a friend on 28 May 16. (Also hiked it as a child when I was about 14-15). A great hike done a number of times in preperation for hiking in Peru.

Clockwise this time
The traditional way to do this big round of 24.5 miles and 5000+ feet of ascent is anticlockwise and starting at Horton, which is what I did back in the 1980's. This however means that the two toughest hills of Whernside and Ingleborough are done in second half of the day - and the steep hard climb of Ingleborough followed by an interminable descent back down to Horton is not an easy finish.
This time (OMG 32 years later!) I went with my old friend Jon plus his son Tom with girlfriend Rosie. We started from Horton - but went clockwise. Thus the interminable stage up to Ingleborough passed relatively un-felt even though it was uphill. And the next one Whernside also wasn't too bad since we all still felt relatively fresh. The third one Pen-y-Ghent was of course harder. The stage to here from Whernside is the longest of all. But it was noticeable that all the while you are gradually chipping away at the height gain, so when faced with the final ascent there is not much left to do even with all the aches and pains acquired in (by then) 9-10 hours of solid walking. And then the final descent back to Horton is just a third the length of the one on the other side from Ingleborough Hill.
Overall we did the round in 11 hours dead, including a few short stops (one for an ice-cream at Ribblehead : )

Back in the 1980's...
I led a large unwieldly party of junior staff from York District Hospital sometime in the summer of 1985. Most were unfit and payed dearly over the next several days - but still got round in under the crucial 12 hours!
My first hike with friends was one of great ups and downs. (pun intended :P)
A group of 6 of us set out to conquer the three peaks of Yorkshire; only 2 of us completed the walk. One experienced hiker ripped a muscle in her upper thigh on the first peak and had to be driven to the doctor. One of my best friends had to give up after the second peak and took it very badly that I and one of his other friends continued on to the third peak. Admittedly, it was not nice for him to wait for us for 3 hours (in the pub and car). On the other hand I had flown in from abroad to do this and the other girl was raising money for an orphanage.
This hike showed me the importance of talking what-if scenarios through before the trip so everyone knows what they get themselves into and expectations are clear and aligned.
Furthermore, it made me fall in love with nature once again. All three peaks are unique and keep the walk interesting: the first one is rocky and pointy, the second one is a slowly rising rim with great views of the valley, and the last one has quite dangerous and steep bits.
I would highly recommend it to starting hikers and groups who want to do some teambuilding before they go on a longer journey.

Yorkshire Three Peaks, a day hike
My wife Penelope (Yorkshire lass living in California) and I hiked the 23+ miles and over 5,000' of gain over the Yorkshire Three Peaks in respectable 10 hours and 25 minutes on June 4th, 2009 while visiting family in Bingley, West Yorks. We loved the hike especially since the weather was mild, a bit cloudy, but no rain. The scenery of The Yorkshire Dales National Park cannot be beat, it is a wonderful place to hike.
Visited this area once whilst at university over the winter break, oh for the return of 4 week holidays. We had quite a lot of snow whilst there and nearly didn't get out! One of the girlies got her ankle broken whilst glissading down on a survival bag, it then took what seemed hours to carry her off on a homemade stretcher using my survival bag and a rope. Never ached so much in my life after that treck!

I have hiked the Three Peaks twice. Once was as a team member of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association, and the second time was with a hiking group. Enjoyed the hike both times, and I would definately recommend it.

Yay for Yorkshire
Only done Ingleborough so far, my first taste of Yorkshire hills. Been up mountains many a time but this area is a unique treat. Beautiful, varied, full of caves and climbing, hiking and cream cakes. And certain pubs that never close.... :D

On the day that we went up Whernside, we had absolutely brilliant weather - the sun was permaently shining and we had a real laugh and a joke - this time with my other cousins

Awful weather when I went up pen-y-ghent, just one third of the yorkshire three peaks, I was very cold and had to take a dose of grandma's special treatment
I WENT UP THE HILL WITH MY COUSINS, GRANDMA, UNCLE, AUNT AND DAD IN FREEZING COLD WEATHER. AS I GOT TO THE TRIG POINT, MANY PEOPLE ASKED ME IF I`D TRAVELLED THE WHOLE WAY UP THE HILL BECAUSE I WAS ONLY SIX.

Every time I visit this wonderful area something has changed. It may be the weather, the thigh deep peat bogs, too many pints in the pub part way around, the company or whatever. All these things and many more have occurred over numerous visits this last fifteen years.
