Zenobia Lookout  Sucess!

Thanks to a mutual friend, I was able to obtain permission to cross the private land on the Zenobia access road, and continue to the summit. The access road remains closed to the general public and the landowners maintain a presence there. They're good folks, but property ownership should be researched and permission arranged well in advance of an attempted visit.

The directions posted here remain accurate, though once you get to Douglas Mountain it should be fairly straightforward to follow the correct path. The key is to keep right at any uncertain intersections, except for the Gate #3 mentioned in the overview. The portion of the road inside the National Monument remains open to vehicle travel, though there is a locked gate a few hundred yards below the summit, at the last switchback. I made it there in a high-clearance Subaru fairly easily, to the amusement of the ranch owners.

The lookout is generally staffed between June and September -- if it is, give a yell to alert the staffer of your approach. The views from the top are desolate and exceptional.

Hike near Zenobia Pk  Sucess!

The road at Gate #2 is closed with a very unfriendly sign, something about the area now being managed by HuntersDomain, no trespassing, no "passing through" even. This in November, 2010.

8/15/10  Sucess!

Lost the road somehow and bushwhacked to the top, rejoining the road towards the end. Took some back roads to Adobe Town near the CO/WY border afterwards.
