The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway runs from the south entrance of the park to the east entrance of the park. Often this entire section is considered together and the east side is exclusively that section east of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel. For most purposes and the purpose of this album I will include all those attractions together that are along the Zion-Mt.Carmel Hwy (SR-9). There are few park advertised trails along the road except the Watchman Trail and the Canyon Overlook, but there are many (not official) named and unnamed routes. The most famous landmark on the east side of the park is Checkerboard Mesa, known for its unique crossbedding. The crossbedding (vertical and horizontal grooves) is caused by weathering, a winter freezing and thawing cycle.
