The Zugspitze ist the highest peak of Germany, but

only half of it is German. The border between Bavaria and Tyrol runs over the summit. It belongs to the Wetterstein range (which means weather rock, because it is hit first by incoming bad weather from the northwest, overshadowing the neighboring mountains to the north and west by more than 600 m).

On the Zugspitz Platt (a limestone plateau south east of the summit, gently descending to the east), there is a ski resort.

Need of crampons

It should be said that in summer the conditions on Höllentalferner are seldom so that one can do it safely without crampons. There are regularly important passages with blank ice.

Re: Need of crampons

Reinhard, Mathias owns the Hollental route, where he says something about crampons. If you think it is not sufficient you could tell him.

crampons

In the glacier 7 October 2013 there was only ice. No way to pass without crampons. The snow can help you cross it earlier in the summer, but there was none at this time of the year.
