Finally made the summit of Zugspitze. First 'attempt' back in 2003 barely got out the front door. Wanting to climb the mountain, rather than ride a tram. It was January and I was totally unprepared for the cold conditions. Got back to GPK last Thursday morning and set off through the Partnachklamm gorge. It was raining mildly from the beginning and didn't stop until I got to the Reintal hütte, at which point it began to snow in earnest. I made it to about 2300m, found the ridge with signs demarcating the Osterreich Deutschland border, but had no visibility and the trail was completely obscured. So I turned back and had a nice glissade. I thawed out at the hut and eventually got back to the trailhead after a few more hours of trudging through rain.
I thought I was busted and would have to make another trip back for the summit when I remembered. I could probably utilize the tram in the morning, make the summit and still get to Switzerland to meet my friend in the afternoon. So that's what I did. Coughed up €53 and took the shortcut. The weather was much better than the previous day when I labored up the Reintal. Despite over a hundred people at the summit station, no one went to the actual summit except me. I used my axe and crampons to break trail (all 10m of the way from the gate to the top) and basked in the glory of the tourists photo flashes!!

Left friends house in Ehrwald Austria and hiked east up to Steinernes Hüttl and ate lunch, then back west crossing into Germany and towards up towards the summit. Had a very good beer at the top.

long approach but fun via ferrata. didnt waste time climbing down, tram is the way to go!!!!

Crazy summit, reminded me of Mt. Washington, NH. Better restaurant though. My only real foray into Germany this trip. By about 20 yards. :-)

Took the train from Heilbronn, arrived at 11 pm in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Laced up my boots at the station and walked to the Olympic Stadium. Very dark, but perfect temperature for hiking. The Partnachklamm was unguarded at this time of night, and I walked through it for free. Couldn't see much, but the noise was loud and it was kind of freaky walking through this loud tunnel alone in the dark. I exited the Partnachklamm and continued along the trail, using the trail signs to continue on the Reintal. After about 3 hours (at 2 am) of walking, I was maybe 1-2 km from the Reintalangerhutte and I ducked into the trees and had a rest for a couple hours. I felt like I had made good time because it was very flat. I brought a 100 gm primaloft jacket for this purpose, so I put it on and went to sleep. I woke up before the sun, and started hiking as it began to get light. I passed the Reintalangerhutte before the sun came up, and started on a very steep section. above the hut would probably have been a better place to rest, more flat spots for a tent, in fact somebody had a tent set up up there. I think it's against the park rules, but who cares... I passed the Knorrhutte at 8 am, as most hikers were beginning their hike who had stayed there. They gave me an odd look, wondering where I had come from. I passed the slow ones and was at the glacier cable car station by 9. There were a lot of sheep up here, so be careful about drinking the water from the streams! The last section is the steepest. A bit of scree that is tedious, and then an easy via ferrata to the huge summit complex. I was at the summit by 10:15 but had to wait a half hour to stand with the summit cross because a bunch of tourists (the ones in loafers who were delivered here on the cable car) were having a tough time climbing up and down the ladder to the cross. I say: get on with it!! A terrible end to a tough hike, but I'm glad that I got it done. 25 km total distance, 2385 m gain.

Climbed from Ehrwald, Austria in snowy condition. Happy to be the only team on the summit.
Climbed the Zugspitze with two friends (one with son) last week. Original aim was to do the Hollental route, but due to the hut closure and not everyone being confident on doing it in a day, we opted for the Ehrwald route as being the likely shortest in time. Started 0700 from Ehrwald station off the first train from Garmisch and arrived at the top 1330 after a leisurely climb. Ferrata wasn't difficult so did it without clipping in, though did make use of the rope and steel spikes.
After eating at the Austrian cafe three of us made our way down by cable car or train but I was mad enough to carry on and attempt to descend to Garmisch via the Reintal leaving the summit at 1500 eventually arriving back down at 2200. A very long day but I've had this one on my todo list since 2009 so worth it!

I climbed this peak with a friend via the Höllentalroute on a beautiful autumn day. Great treecolors in de valley, nice snow on the summit and klettersteig. The glacier was a bit icy so we fortunately didn't bring our crampons and ice axe for nothing. It was a long day from hammersbach to the summit. The klettersteig was sometimes covered under the snow which created some tricky parts. We summited just before sunset and slept on the platt. We had the route and the summit for our selves! We stood up quite early to watch sunrise from the summit. Magnificient views. The route down to Ehrwald/Eibsee was also beautiful, but early in the morning with some icy parts.

Had an awesome time climbing this high point from Hammertal. The entire trip is beautiful. Got some crazy looks from the Germans because I traversed the glacier without crampons (not recommended) but quickly made friends with them after their initial shock. ran into a bit of a traffic jam above glacier but it was fun to chat with the fellow climbers. Toasts abounded on summit with BERGHEIL being bellowed at the top of our lungs. Then ate at restaurant before heading back down via ridge route. LONG DAY!!!

Five hours climb from Ehrwald. I prefer this route on hot summer days, as this is completely in shadow.

It was a wonderful trip after a night out, since I started very late from Ehrwald (after a trip to Osterfelderkopf from GaPa). I slept in my sleeping bag underneath overhang at the place where there is a bench with (supposedly) nice view over the valley. I came there in deep night with my headlamp at 9:15 p.m. I wanted to sleep in the Wiener Neustadter huette, but could not then find the way further in fog and in the dark, so I slept there. The next day there was a wonderful inversion - clouds were solely in valleys underneath. I came to the huette, ate there, rested for a while after a night out and went on to the Klettersteig. It was actually quite easy. The only obstacle was the fresh snow. For the way back I used the cable car. It was a wonderful trip for me.

Eibsee Cable Lift
Unfortunately not the time of year for climbing. Still I wanted to visit the high point of Germany. Without any true effort on my part, it might be only fair that I couldn't got to the true summit cross which was 5 or 10 meters higher. I could see a way to get there but the unconsolidated snow covering the ferrata helped me decide not to try it.
