Second time was the charm
Beautiful day to visit the volcano. I hiked one of the lava flow trails down below then drove up to the rim and hiked the rim trail and crater trail. Love the views of the old lava flows from up top.

Fun Trip With My Kids
Took the road to the rim trail. Hiked as much as we were allowed to there. My daughter, age 7 at the time, asked "Daddy, will the volcano interrupt?"

Fun with my kids!
We needed a break on a long road trip. My three year old girl hiked the paved rim trail with me while my one year old boy caught a ride in the backpack. I took some nice photos along the way, then lost my camera in the parking lot. We returned about a week later to pick up the camera on the way back west from Missouri.
would have a road that spirals around a volcano? The hike around the summit and then down into the volcano is great. Btw, capulin is Spanish for choke cherry.

What a cool thing, full of life. Wish it was bigger, and wish they had camping. Great views.

A nice surprise
We came across Capulin on the way from Black Mesa to Wheeler Peak. The views made the stop well worth while.

Great Views
Great views from the top of one of the largest intact cinder cones in the world. Summited with my son Ian (in backpack) and my wife. Great weather for February - 55 degrees and blue bird skies!
Great view from the top--the volcano is so prominent over the rest of the desert, it is amazing watching storms roll in over the horizon.

My First Volcano
Stopped by Capulin Volcano as recommended by my dad. The drive from Colorado to the volcano was very picturesque, but the rest of the drive to Texas was completely flat. We hiked the 1/4 mile trail down inside the crater, then the 1 mile trail around the cone. Great views of the surrounding area and some other volcanos in the area. Plenty of benches and information along the hike. I'd recommend checking this out if you're in the area!

"The Carriage Route"
Actually, the NPS allows hikers on the Capulin summit road before or after Park hours. The date we climbed, the closing hour was 1600, but to change to 1830 on May 26th. We left our truck at 1630 and returned at 1815 having hiked the road to the "summit" parking lot, then the 1 mile loop around the crater, which includes the actual summit. Great views from the top. Even hiking a road brings one closer to the mountains than driving to the top. We encountered one rattlesnake along the roadside on the way down and gave him wide berth.
