We did it without trekking poles (Aug. 2008). It's still awful, but it can be done. Congrats on withstanding the weather.
Nice report and congrats - it is a gret mountain. I climbed the peak in October and found that with a small quantity of snow, the rocks and other ballbearings that you mention become frozen into place and the ascent is made immesurably more pleasant.
