avarMont Blanc end of Sept
Hi!

I am just about to do Mont Blanc with my girlfriend either one of the French or the Italian normals (or under very ideal circumstances Tournette Spur might also be), approximately from 14th till 23rd of September, but the weather may change the time schedule. Since our other party has just resigned it will be fun and much safer to have another rope team around us to climb with. How flexible are you with the time? Have you already found a partner?

IslandTravellerWill check earlier time

IslandTraveller

No partner yet - I'll see how much I could budge the schedule to an earlier start. Possibly one week earlier but I have doubts it could be done earlier for me. Give a comment tomorrow about it.

IslandTravellerTrip dates refined

IslandTraveller

Hello again Adam,

judging from the work schedule - it is unlikely I will be able to take a week off between 1-5 of October. That is, my trip will be either:
- 15-23 September
or
- 22-30 September

Ideally I would be able to choose week according to weather but I will have to guess. Would both time alternatives work for you?

avarMight be suitable both
Hi!

Yes, perhaps both would be okay. Ideally I would rather choose the earlier one due to weather and mountain condition considerations, but there is still a lot of uncertainity with the schedule because of work issues yet. As soon as I know more, I'll let you know. And moreover I think, the weather should be the decisive factor on the timeframe.

Other than that there is a German guy here on SP looking for partner in the same timeframe to do Mont Blanc. Maybe it would be worth to pick him up as well, what do you think?

avarItalian or French?
Also are you interested solely on the Italian side? I was thinking to choose either the Italian or the French side according to the conditions. I would really prefer the Italian one, however a tougher glacier terrain with more snow then would be more difficult to overcome with. And I don't know if the Gonella hut is already accessible.

Thus we were thinking to decide on either on the routes just right after we arrived.

IslandTravellerConsiderations

IslandTraveller

Agree with you.

I will need to select which week to choose within 7 days (that is - without knowing the weather). Reason is work and flights needs to be arranged... I hope that 9 days will be enough for avoiding bad weather (bad weather days could be used for acclimatisation trips?) Although last time I was in Courmayeur it was shit weather for a week in northern Italy... It would be fine for me to arrive "early" and if weather is fine you arrive (as long as it would be before Thursday).

I could consider the french side as well if conditions are bad on the italian side. However I have doubts this could affect the choice very much since the normal route italian side will join the french normal route at Dome du Gouter. If conditions are "worse" in lower regions I could still consider Italian side - it is the conditions above 3500m that matters.

Gonella hut might not be operational that is true, that is one reason Tournette is an option. Another option is pitching a tent at sunset and continue the next day. French side would be easier in this respect.

Well, why not check with the guy from Germany? I think he specified the earliest time period - this could be fine if I can arrange this with work...

Let's continue e-mailwise? You have PM.

Hello buddy,
I would go for these dates. I am only worried about the weather.
Tournette Spur sounds great, but I have no experience with ice climbing - means don't have any ice screws, two ice axes and stuff. If you do the leading, I have no problem with belay. If not, italian side is fine with me as it is less technical.
Please let me know.
