Im currently in Iraq, but as of spring 08 my wife and i will be at Ft. Benning GA, looking for some people that know the good backpacking/ climbing in the area.

A really good hiking/backpacking group in Georgia is the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club.

I'm a member, and every week there are several hikes and at least one backpacking trip. They don't do too much climbing, but they will get you familiar with the area.
