Description

I am an avid backpacker and hiker, but recently realized that I have been picking my treks based on the total elevation gained and the views. This led me to figure that I am just a mountaineer without much experience on larger peaks.

I have done the smaller hills around the area such as Mt. Defiance, Dog Mountain, Saddle Mountain, and am currently conditioning through hikes and gym for larger climbs. I also do climbing at StoneWorks in Beaverton about twice a week.

I am primarily looking for a climbing partner for joint encouragement for training during the week, and climbing and hikes on the weekends. Like I said I am a beginner so as long as you are okay with showing me the ropes or traveling at a slightly slower pace I am game for anything.

Here is my goals for the late winter, summer and fall:
- Mt Defiance again but with my plastic boots
- Mt Stain Helens (got about 1500ft up but had to turn around because my boots had given me serious shinbang)
- Mt Adams
- Mt Hood
- Learn to lead rock, possible at Broughton Bluff

Email me if you have questions, suggestions, or are interested in joining me.

billisfreeMt Adam isn't too technical

I suggest you "backpack" up Mt. Adams' south route anytime after June. It's really not that technical or dangerous. There's plenty of bare ground with an equal amount of easy snow walking.

Take crampons and an ice axe to make things a bit easier above 9,000 ft.

Just camp at one of dozens of campsites at the 8 to 9 thousand ft level. Climb to top and back to car the next day.

There's always a few amatuers trying to climb that route without the "required equipment".

Fittness and adequate water is more important than equipment.

Suggested plan.

Leave home 9am
Arrive at Trout Lake Ranger station at 11am. But climbing pass ($15)

Drive out to Cold Creek campgrounds (6,000 ft) - start your hiking no later than 3pm.

6 - 8 pm. Set up your bivouac on sandy ground at the "lunch counter" at 9,000 ft, cook a nice dinner.
Enjoy a nice stary night.

3-4am... get an Alpine start - head straight up the glacier.
(nobody ropes up on this climb)

8am - reach False summit (Piker;s peak) 11,600ft Leave crampons and other unneeded equipment.

9am Summit (Sit around clap and cheer for each newbie that arrives after you)

11am - reach lunch counter camp, take nap, pack up.

backpack back to car... should get out before 6pm.

Drive home.

Cheers! No Fear!

You posted this awhile ago but I was wondering if you still need training partners? I'm also new to mountaineering but am up for adventures. I'll be in Portland from June to August. Let me know.

John,

I have some of the same goals and might be interested in joining you for some training if you are still looking for a partner. I have a lot of backpacking experience and some basic mountaineering experience. I have completed basic south side walk ups of Adams, Hood, South Sister, Diamond Peak, St Helens and Eagle Cap. No rock climbing experience as of yet. I have wanted to get into the sport, but havent found a partner. My schedule is a bit rough, I usually work evening shifts, but have one day a week off and every other weekend. My main goals are to become more competent so I can take a crack at Rainier in 2010 and some of the peaks in the North Cascades and Olympics. I dont know if our schedules could work out, but PM me if you are interested in meeting.

Hey,

I'd be happy to climb some mountains with you. I (and my friend Zoe, who is similarly inclined) have moderate experience in a good amount of technical mountaineering skills (save leading rock and ice), but like you lack any big mountain experience. We're both free most weekends.

Let me know,
Benjamin
