'Hummingbird' Moth

'Hummingbird' Moth

'Hummingbird' Moth enjoying a flower of a thistle in the Spring Mountains, Nevada. They are active both during the day and at night. As they feed on flowers, their resemblance to a hummingbird is striking. You can hear their loud humming noises and watch them hoover in place.

Great shot!

I saw these for the first time in Lee Vining and was convinced they were birds. I ran around with my brothers trying to catch one. We met with no success.

Re: Great shot!

Thanks. When I saw them for the first time, I also mistook them for hummingbirds.

Saw them often

as a kid growing up in northern Utah. They were attracted to porch lights, so I urged my friends and neighbors to limit their outdoor lighting and purchase "bug lights."
We're talking the early 1970s.

Re: Saw them often

Thanks for the comment. This is a photo from a few summers ago when I just discovered what these creatures were. It was exciting and exotic for me to learn a new insect.
I have seen them this summer also. Interesting observation: Hummingbirds often fight with each other over a thistle flower. Yet, when a hummingbird and a hummingbird moth meet on the same flower they are willing to share! Cheers.
