Gila County Highpoint

Gila County Highpoint

Looking northeast from a turnout along Arizona's Highway 260 at (7,920+ ft) Promontory Butte. The western slopes of this promonent butte (14.6 miles NE of Payson), contain Horton Springs and the Horton Creek Trail, which also connects with the Highline Trail. A second Gila County Highpoint exists approximately 6 miles W of Promontory Point, called Mytle Point. Both of these points are located along the edge of the Mogollon Rim escarpment, which forms the southernmost edge of the Colorado Plateau. The same mountain- building (geologic) event that uplifted the Mogollon Rim also created the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The vegatation shown is Ponderosa pines and the white blooms of Western Yarrow. June 3, 2008

Special area

I've been to both spots you mention and the view to down below is nice. Arizona has a lot of great areas to explore and enjoy and has MacArthur once said, "I shall return"

Re: Special area

As long as you hang on to your supreme
Toyota 4x4 that greets you at every TH,
then no problem! All you have to do is
gas er up, and air up the tires. Maybe
change the oil and wipe the bugs off the
windshield. How's Utah's outback looking?

Re: Special area

The outback is awesome. What a treasure find. I hope to get one more trip out there before heading up to washington to frolic in the snow and ice. Lovin' Utah though, what a diverse and beautiful state.

Re: Special area

Right on. How about Topaz Mountain? WA
sounds like a nice place to visit, with
the temps rising in the deserts. Regards!
