"WIDE ANGLE"-UPPER ST. MARY'S LAKE-GLACIER NATIONAL PARK-MT

This is the whole image, as seen from Gooseberry Island viewpoint on a beautiful July day in 2008. The digital image was taken at 19mm on my Digital Nikon D80, giving the wide view. Among the peaks seen are Little Chief, Dusty Star, Fusillade, Heavy Runner, and Going-to-the-Sun, to name a few. We made it a habit to stop here on the way to any trail in the eastern part of the park. It is, emotionally, one of my favorate places in the national park system. Perhaps the reason is "the starting point."

A couple things...

...big mountain on the left is Little Chief, and Going-to-the-Sun Mountain is hidden behind the ridge on the far right and actually can't be seen from this vantage point.

No matter...it's a thrilling view, one you never tire of! The thing that simply can't be judged from photographs, is how BIG those mountains are (for example, it's almost a vertical mile from St. Mary Lake to the top of Little Chief).

This View...

This was the view that got me into the mountains when I was fairly young. I agree, this is a view that one can watch for a long time.
