So that Sunday morning of September 28th, 1986 the "Gigi" Gadin and "Peppino" Lamazzi dawn were under my house. The "Gigi" (which is a Professor of Technology and character typically, as he says, "Swiss") is a little concerned about the late hour, partly because the "Peppino" (which is a much more fatalistic Modenese Pavullo) had arrived late and he took it with comfortable. We have yet to decide what to do and where. As usual, the discussion is wide and
"wandering" throughout the Valley of Aosta but then, being that we are very practical and have good sense of analysis, we arrive at the conclusion with broad agreement of the parties, denoting great ability to know promptly make a decision. Discarding a dozen other cases we arrive at a clear and unanimous conclusion (Ah, if these politicians Italians were able to imitate us!).
Phase One: from 6.30 to 9.45, more or less, we have to decide where to go yet. Being a group very
"democratic", things go a little to long. Then the final decision and unequivocal: we go to Courmayeur to make the Aiguille Jean Joseph Croux
(3257m), that "Gigi" has already climbed above the Refuge Monzino and under the Southern Slope of Mont Blanc.
Alea iacta est. The die is suddenly or, better and better, the dice is cast! We start at 10.00. From home! The trip to Courmayeur in the summer is always an adventure (it had not yet been built Motorway Morgex), but, being now over the summer, and then we get to Courmayeur enough "soon" and towards the Veny Valley along the Regional Road up to La Visaille
(about 1675 metres), where the path to the Shelter Monzino, built a little below the old glorious Hut Cesare Gamba at Châtelet
(2663m).
Phase Two: the ascent to Monzino is routine; only to be made against the time, for the hour is late and, being the end of September, there remain many hours of light. We climb faster and surpass even the Shelter. There, in front, stands the rocky cliff Croux. We stopped to eat, and when we finish, increased 14.00, almost 15.00. But there is plenty of time to climb to the Summit. We have not miscalculated. But "Peppino" there second thoughts and says that, since the
"race" we have done so far, for him and just sits quiet with no envy for us that we continue. We who, sweating like beasts and looking downstairs, we begin to have a little bit of envy against him. And some small change of mind exists, but then, with the action, everything passes and are set aside bad thoughts. Incidentally we came here to do the Croux and not to us the doctor prescribed.
Step Three: After a crossing on a track toward the Northeast, which progressively thins, begin to climb on the rocks of the Face West-southwest or
"Via of the plaques". Are not difficult but rather covered with grassy ledges, alternating with small walls of easy climbing. We try to stay on the edge of the right and we reach a first notch, on the left with a slope of broken rock. Staying on the edge of the ridge, with climbing more difficult to get a second where, facing to the right, it turns out the abyss of Southeast Wall, which drops vertically for
about 200 metres. Staying on the edge or just on its left, reach, through steep rocks and quite difficult, a second notch, shaped like a narrow window on the wall, which by this point we see fall on the underlying and upset by seracs almost evenly aligned, Glacier Freney. Suddenly next steeper and challenging leads us under a large reddish plaque. But in the mean time goes decidedly worse and large fog envelop more and more of the mountains, hiding even the rest of the way. By now it is very late and a subtle darkness is covering everything. Consult the clock. we can also reach the Top, now very close, but then the descent? Perhaps through the Northwest Ridge, easier, over the Col Innominata
(3205m) that the "Gigi" has already done that but, at this time I did not know. We have no batteries and there is not even the moon. Better return. So we do not regret it. We have just enough time to get to the Monzino. Then there is total darkness and not even "Peppino", which has seen fit to go down.
Step Four: the descent is tragic, almost comic. The dark, while the mists envelop more and more the mountain, surprised us before the shelter and each step must be well controlled. We descend along the same route, and I assure you that we do not do with your hands in your pocket; then down the stony occasionally stumbling over a pebble. We pass the Monzino that now is dark and deep engagement a close fight with my lighter: the tenuous flame will drive us all the way down to La Visaille. The research of the chains that serve the rock wall is not easy but, after several attempts, we find us descending through the same, now washed by a trickle of water and humidity of the night that progresses. In complete darkness, because here you can not use it even lighter. Only between a section and the next in order to identify where the chain is placed below. Nevertheless in the end we come to the more simple part, where the path goes down. But we do not see the same except for a few meters, only to lose immediately after the path. When we get to the rock bands further down we lose him completely, as we hear on our left is the final part of the seracs of the glacier Frêney creak and then break themselves not far from us. We try to stay to the right, going down even with the less noble parts between smooth and polished plates mixed with bushes. It is not at all pleasant, but we make a virtue of necessity. Somehow we get down at the Dora Veny, where do I find that the plastic of my lighter is completely melted and my thumb with her. The "Gigi" does not speak more ill of smokers, while the "Pepin" rightly tired of waiting, is gone. When we get home to tell us that he had found at Visaille a Mountain Guide Courmayeur staring upward with binoculars:
"I saw two lunatics who were leaving at 15.00 to go to Croux. At the end of September! In fact there were three, but one stopped and I have not seen him. For if it was you?". The "Pepin" replied:
"No, no, do not know them really". Go to trust the Friends!.
A fin Settembre! Anzi eran tre, ma uno s'é fermato e non l'ho più visto. Per caso era lei?". Il "Pepin" di rimando: "No, no, non li conosco proprio".
Vai a fidarti degli amici!
