This guy was guarding a flock of hundreds of sheep amongst 13,000 foot peaks in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. He came over to make sure we weren’t a threat and followed us until we were out of the area. After doing some research I discovered that he is an Akbash, a breed native to Turkey that has proven to be most effective in protecting livestock from coyotes in Colorado. Rugged “El Punto” can be seen in the background. San Juan Mountains, Colorado. August 2008.
