part of our sawtooth traverse trip
But a very cool basin
Very simple! Still awesome!
Great recovery day climb after Fish hook Spire.
After a long day climbing Fishhook Spire, the hike to Sawtooth Lake and the scramble up Alpine Peak were perfect! Trail ran back for fun. Sunny and 55F
Climbed up from iron creek trailhead with 2 others camped at sawtooth lake.Easy hike lot's o scree. Gorgeous summit views!!
Great day climb from Iron Creek. 12 mile loop of 7 hours, with 2.6 miles of off-trail, 3300' total gain. Overcast, windy at times, and cool. Few sign ins to the register, but strangely three were from 9/13! Lots of fresh goat scat, but no sightings. Great views of Thompson and Williams. The scramble down from Alpine's east ridge toward Alpine Lake was a lot of fun. I uploaded our track jpeg for reference.
An unpleasant scree slog from Sawtooth Lake rewarded me with a perfect day and view of Merritt Peak and vicinity. Met a fellow trying to invent a loop that involved that hidden little valley and I considered joining him, but did not and tried Regan the next morning. Met 3 from the Sierras descending gingerly and put 1000 feet between us in 2 minutes on lingering snow patches. Coming down is easy on this one. Certainly a peak accessible to everyone and one of my favorite views in the whole range thus far.
Camped with the whole family at Alpine Lake and day hiked up to Sawtooth Lake. Me and my oldest son scrambled up to the top while the rest went down. We tagged the summit before my 4 year old made it back to camp with my wife and other kids.
Climbed after walking up from Iron Creek trailhead before heading up Regan the next day.
Hiked with my Son Slade to the base, we ran out of time, we will be back to tag it!
Traversed the south ridge with Sean, our third peak of the day. Fantastic day in the mountains. Cool to see the Marten on the summit. Here's a trip report with photos.
Reached summit with SuperDave after climbing Regan and Pt 9486. We saw a friendly Marten at the summit! Like Regan, summit log was missing, but we added a temporary one. Great day.
What a FANTASTIC view from the top !
Backpacking trip including Mt. Regan attempt. Nice day!
Camped at alpine lake and got snowed on pretty well. Hiked up the gully to the east of the summit towards the valley between merritt and alpine. climbed up a snow chute to the summit ridge and over to the summit. midwinter conditions, which was surprising given that it was summer... great first summit in the sawtooths.
a few inches of fresh snow from the past 2 weeks added a little to the challenge. Pretty steep hiking up the west slopes. Great Indian Summer day. Could not find a summit register (maybe buried in the snow)
Fun scramble with my buddy Mike up the NW Ridge for something different, then down SE slopes to the beautiful basin between Alpine and Merritt Peak. I saw the goat beds also and some Pika along the way. I was surprised that there wasn't a summit register given how popular and easy this one is. Comparatively speaking, the rock is pretty solid on the northwest ridge and much of the south to east slopes. We popped out near that lower meadow about 1 mile from the TH. It was windy and chilly for August (55F and cloudy).
Scrambled up the west side from the south end of Sawtooth Lake. There was considerable snow above Alpine Lake, and the first 2/3 of the route was on snow with crampons. The final few hundred feet featured extraordinarily loose scree and talus, but the view from the summit was more than worth it. There were thunderstorms in the area all afternoon, but luckily I was never caught too close. Great peak!
Great intro to the Sawtooths. Shelby and I were blown away by the area. Very rewarding summit, views are amazing. We thought that Sawtooth Lake looked like a small Crater Lake (Oregon).
