Annotated panorama of the trail junction: for Schöllijoch and Barrhorn follow the main trail, for the Brunegg Glacier take the smaller side trail to the right

This cairn along the main trail from the Turtmannhütte to the Schöllijoch marks the junction with the less obvious side trail that soon leads to the Brunegg Glacier at the base of the Schöllihorn. The clearly recognizable main trail first leads to the Schöllijoch, the saddle between Schöllihorn and the Barrhorn twins. It's possible to descend down the other side of that saddle (scrambling down steep rocks but secured by steel cables, UIAA grade F+), but most people on the trail turn left at the saddle and hike up Üssers Barrhorn, the summit of which is just out of sight, and then return to the Turtmannhütte. It's very easy to bag Inners Barrhorn along the way, and, from the Schöllijoch, hike to the Schöllihorn and back. The side trail sees much less people, and is used predominantly by climbers from the Turtmannhütte on the normal route to the Brunegghorn (PD-). It's also the way to go for all other routes from the Turtmannhütte to the Brunegghorn, as well as for the Bishorn East ridge (AD-) from the Bisjoch and for the Bishorn NE face (D).
