is this still in the main couloir above upper Boy Scout Lake, or is this (as the caption seems to suggest) above the couloir and heading up the last part of the NF to the summit? never been up this way so i'm curious -- particularly with what look like grim ski conditions in late April if that is indeed the couloir.
oh yeah, great pic!
Rich, this is above the couloir, very close to the summit. Probably the steepest section of the route
This is not the main gulley.Once you come out of the main gulley you go through the notch and hook a left into this steep couloir. From there its about 100 meters up to the summit. Speaking about skiing, the day we summited there were two skiers in the main gulley.A guy and a girl. The guy went about 3/4 of the way up and the girl 1/2 way. Conditions seemed pretty good, with soft crust on top.Anyhow had a blast, climbed it with derbilly.
thanks all. so is that the notch behind/below you (in front of the bigger gendarme)?
then i guess this is the part of the route that everyone says is the scary part of the MR when it is icy/snowy?
can't get up there this winter, but will be looking to schralp the couloir next winter
Hey! When you guys reverse this section, you're supposed to rap it and leave me some gear! I'm trying to improve my collection...;-)
Rapping the 3rd class? I have better purpose for my slings :)
Rich, here is another good shot from approx. the same spot
Just when it's an ice field --- I found a nice #3 camalot & biner on the way to Russell once!
