The gateThis gate does not tell people that this is the way to the summit. There is graffitti on the only sign in the parking lot. In fact there is very little info anywhere on the path to this wonderful mountain to let people know this is Sassafras. There is litter on the side of the road mostly beer cans which is a shame and which is a negative for our state. If a hiker wants to take the Chimney trail, which is off to the side near the top, and marked 2.2 miles, I recommend getting into a second car where you egress the trial down below for the going back up because it is a mighty strenuous walk on the road if you walk up yourself. If a person wanted to lose weight in the great outdoors, this is a terrific spot to do so!! Very few come along the way here so you will be pretty much alone. Bring plenty of water. The Chimney trail wends its way through old growth hardwood forest, and is a wide trail most of the way with pretty flowers, butterflies, and unusual mushrooms. Bring a walking stick. Best wishes.
