ATHABASCA AND DOME GLACIERS FROM WILCOX PASS-1986

Wilcox Pass was the traditional route for crossing this valley when the Athabasca Glacier completely crossed the valley (ca. 1906). The earliest photograph taken was a 1906 image by Mary Schaffer, which shows the Athabasca Glacier reaching the Icefield Chalet area. This 1986 Ektachrome Slide (Scanned) was taken from the pass and gives a good idea of the size of this glacier in 1986. Global warming has had a major effect on this glacier and has caused it to retreat over a mile plus in the last 22 years. The trail head to Wilcox Pass is well marked and about one mile south of the icefield chalet complex.
