August 24 and Lower Skyline is still closed!

Skyline Trail, Mt. Rainier NP - August, 2009 Important sign here indicating that the the rangers feel using the Lower Skyline Trail across the snow to continue on Skyline is ill-advised. Hikers can use the High Skyline Trail or turn around. Despite this warning several people used it without poles and seemed to do fine. The advantage is the saving of time and effort.

Maybe the Rangers forgot

to remove the sign?

Rangers have a lot on their plates. Sometimes,
their best efforts go unnoticed when people
fail to read the signs anyway.

It probably has something to do with liability issues.

Re: Maybe the Rangers forgot

I don't know. Someone at Panorama Point said that the sign was recent. Either way, I didn't feel comfortable going across it at the angle and depth of snow. (But considering what happened to me on High Skyline......)
