Solo  Sucess!

August 28, I drove to barren McKay flat in search of Baptist Draw. It was a long drive, but turned out to be worth it. This canyon got very narrow. It's about 30 mins walk from the parking on the plateau, walking past the Teepee formation to east side then down into the draw.

Before I committed to down climbing the first rappel, I went in search of a possible exit between the first and 2nd rappels. I found one, and was able to enter the draw walk to the first rappel and up climb it. Then down climb it and continue to the 2nd rappel which has a very kewl narrow section.

baptist draw and upper chute  Sucess!

Fun adventure, tight slots, not too much water - was able to negotiate it pretty easy. The route finding was pretty straight forward - used on-line Ryan's trips.
Started lated so did not have time to explore the lower Chute canyon section, which should be much easier.

Pleasant surprise  Sucess!

Went down Baptist Draw and up Chute with a group of 18 chics! Quite a bit of water; wore wetsuits. Beautiful canyon despite its lack of difficulties!

Long Day  Sucess!

Did this one with Jeff & Andy. What a fun day. I actually have no clue what we really did. It sounded like we were originally in Baptist Draw but maybe got off route early on? There was no 80' rap to be seen. Our first rap was approx 20' and maybe the 2nd was a little longer. Both raps were pretty close together. NOTHING was close to 80'. Maybe 40' at best on our 3rd rap. I think we ended up in Chute. After a while the narrows got pretty steep. The rock was clean. No place to build an anchor without a bolt kit. We made it to this slide like formation that dumped out into a pool. Since we were realy not sure exactly where we were I kept making mental notes on possible excape routes along the way. After being in the canyon for about 4-5 hours and basically getting to what I saw as the point of no return and our dead end, we climbed out of the canyon and hitched a ride back to the car after hiking for over 4 hours, navigating across country. It is soooo easy to get turned around in that desert. What an awesome time. Next time I won't lose the beta on the route. oopsie. SUPER gorgeous canyon. I think we turned this into a 12 hour day, most of which we spend wandering around, hoping to spot something that looked like Teepee or a road.

Baptist Draw  Sucess!

April 17 2016

The weather forecast was good and the skies looked mostly clear, so Justin, Kessler, and I headed out for the head of Baptist Draw. The drive took a little longer than expected, but we had started early so had plenty of time to explore the canyon.

We took off from the trailhead and made our way into Baptist Draw. It was a nice slot canyon. At the first 12 foot drop, we opted to rappel. Previously I had downclimbed the drop. After that, it was a nice descent to the top of the big rappel. It's only 65 feet high, but for some reason it looks a lot higher from above.

After rappelling into Chute Canyon, we took a little break before heading up canyon. This is one of the best slot canyons around and is is nearly dark in places. It is a very impressive slot canyon and very deep. The slot was also a little more difficult than it was previously since a log was wedged in the slot at one drop and it was a pain to climb around. The drop at the head was also a bit tougher than I remember it.

After that it was just a cross country scramble and ramble back to the trailhead. It was a great slot canyon loop and we were glad to do it.

Bad weather thwarted previous plans, so my brother Richard joined me for a loop in this beautiful canyon. We didn’t start until late afternoon and didn’t bring a watch in the canyon, so we really hoofed it through fast. We had to rap once, but could down or upclimb everything else without a rope. Unfortunately we had to pack some trash out of Baptist, but the rest of the loop was good. It only took us 2 ½ hours; all non-stop except for at the top of the rap to harness up.

PS, someone placed some extremely poor and dangerous bolts at the big drop. Don't use them and someone should take a wrench and pull them out (they are just cheap hardware bolts that should pull easily with a wrench).
