Dayhike with Sean & Asaka. Bagged Basin then Castle then Andesite.
I ran the Lost and Found 30K "running" race that started at Soda Springs Ski Area, went out to Summit Lake, then back to Castle Pass trail and headed out to summit of Basin, and then back to Soda Springs (coming close to Andesite Peak on the way back). It was a very tough race.
Basin Peak via Castle Valley Trailhead and Castle Pass. Walked along the ridge between Castle and Basin Peak. Party of 2. 4 miles and 1 hour 47 minutes to the summit. Weather was sunny with no cloud coverage and mild winds and mild Fall temps. 1,900 ft elevation gain.
Nice morning hike up Castle then across the ridge to Basin.
From Castle Peak we saw a forest fire start--I think near Kyburz. Eek! We traversed from Castle to Basin, then took a cross country route down Basin and eventually met back up with the trail.
day hike (with snowshoes).
Complete whiteout summer blizzard, but made it to the summit.
Pics and trip report are here.
Nice loop with a little snow on the summits.
Excellent use trail along the ridge. No views due to fog.
First hiked up Castle Peak and then headed over to Basin Peak. Nice walk along the easy ridge with good views. Tagged Andesite on the way out. 9.4 miles round trip with 2850 feet of gain.
Ran most of the way to Basin Peak until the real hiking started. I couldn't take all trail due to snow, so had to bushwhack a bit. Then went to the summit of Castle Peak
Longer trip than we were expecting from the snopark but conditions are good. Some cornices forming but otherwise the snow pack seems purty stable. Used traction but no snowshoes needed.
After first big winter storm hit a few days ago I wanted to get out in some winter conditions, first going up the 3 towers on Castle then over to Basin. Foolishly left snowshoes at home thinking the snow wasn't deep enough yet...that's how it can take over 7 hours to cover 9 miles... Trip Report
As the title says, loop with Castle and Andesite.
Skinned up Castle Peak, traversed over to Basin, then skied down into Round Valley. It was an awesome day full of great snow! Check out the trip report:
Overnight backpack started with Andesite, to Castle, to Basin and down to Paradise Lake. Good fun and lovely setting at the lake.
Snowshoed it. Traversed over along the ridgeline from Castle Peak and back down towards Peter Grubb Hut.
Snow shoe from the sno park. Very windy along the ridge.
On the way down from Castle Peak, traversed the ridge to Basin Peak. There was a little snow.
After looking at it and bypassing it for years, finally climbed it as an add-on to a winter ascent of Castle Peak with SMG. High winds and not much snow...but it was a fun little summit anyway.
