I love benchmarks and registers. I first look for the benchmark and then for a register. Most peaks have one or the other or both.
Neat album idea.
Thank you Dean for your vote and very nice comment. I think bench marks and registers add to the fun of climbing.
...I attatched your album to my summit structres album since in a way they are related.
Thank you Rob for your vote and comment. That was a great idea you had. I got some pictures to add to your summit structres album. It seems every summit I've reached so far has some type of structure on it.
Nice, but what are they? i dont know it..is it for GPS?
They're for mapmaking, usually by the US Geodetic Survey. (Most are quite a bit older than GPS -- the Survey started in 1869.) They mark a location used for measurement. Some are placed on summits, some are placed at spots that are visible from the air, some are placed along a clear line of sight to another known location. Some are used to measure position, some are used to measure elevation. People especially like to find and photograph the ones on summits where the USGS has engraved the name and elevation - it's a way of proving you were there.
Ok, thanks for the info! I think its aspecialy for the US?
Should be an interesting collection!
Thank you for your vote and comment. This album does have the possibility of being really large.
