I have been hiking this trail for over ten years. Its a great hike all year round. However, I have never seen bootleggers, or ever heard of vandals or theft in the parking areas. Your only concern on this hike should be bears.
Isolated incident, true > but reality nonetheless. I have been to the trail many times since the aforementioned episode & had no problems whatsoever.
