Great hike and weather along with Ellingwood.
Did this on a 2 day trip, camped Saturday at Lake Como and hit the summit the next day, rested for about 1/2 hour while breaking down camp, and descended. On the way up got sidetracked in a couloir pretty close to Ellington and then had to take the ridge the rest of the way to Blanca. Would have liked to do another peak in the area, but facing an 8 mile descent and tired legs decided to scrap and drive back to Denver. Beautiful!
The traverse from little bear is the best CO 14 traverse, and maybe the best CO 14er route period. probably only class 4, though a bit exposed. TR up at http://zoomloco.xanga.com/732717261/purple-mountain-majesties/
Fun Climb from Huerfano Basin. Car shuttle to Lake Como Road after tagging Ellingwood Point as well.
Backpacked up the Hanus Lake Como Road and camped at Como Lake. Climbed Blanca and Ellingwood the next day and did the ridge traverse between them.
Climbed with B. Davidson.
With Goldielocks and Will. Great weather, snowshoes not needed.
brought skis intending to ski down.. no snow off the top so left skis at someones camp.. joyful to carry em that far for no reason .. made the best of it.. nice day with cool peeps despite no turns.
A personal favourite & one of my earlier winter ascents.
and stuck to da ridge
Great day. Enjoyed the fun scrambling to be taken in on the ridge proper to Blanca. Skipped to the summit from there. Perfect weather, minus some low-lying clouds and mist.
Backpacked up the road to Lake Como and the day was still very clear and calm, so I headed up to tag Blanca and Ellingwood. Made it back to camp as the sun was going down.
Saw the same crowd from Little Bear, which we had all climbed the prior sunny day. But no views that morning!
Favorite mountain in Colorado!
A foggy day
Probably my favorite traverse so far. Awesome! Trip report
Drove by Jeep to Lake Como. Pitched our tent next to some friends and then climbed Blanca Peak the next day. It was a quick hike - 5 hrs roundtrip from Lake Como. The vistas are stunning. Can't wait to return for Little Bear and Ellingwood.
Some day I'd like to return due to foggy low visibility conditions. I don't remember exactly when I climbed Blanca, but it was probably around 1997 or so.
Slow day for me, intended to do Little Bear but after feeling sick all morning just made the stroll up Blanca. Beautiful area, I'd recommend camping above Lake Como if you want more quiet and privacy.
I went up Blanca first and traversed across to Ellingwood. I didn't think Blanca was quite as hard as I expected. Weather was great and the views were beautiful. Traverse was easy Class 3 and enjoyable.
