Nice hike from Boreas Pass with Baldy Mountain. Very windy day.
With 12700 & Volz Benchmark.
With Michelle. Easy hike, great views, total solitude. What did I see from the summit? That there is a HELL of a lot of ski lines still in condition. I'll give you one guess as to what my plan is for tomorrow… Now THIS is Colorado!
From Boreas Pass
7.6 miles & 3,500 feet
Continued ridge after hiking up Bald Mountain. Came down the western talus slope directly to Boreas Pass.
Nice hike from Boreas Pass, the aspens are starting to turn.
Second time up, with Volz BM and PT 12700 B via a loop tour from Selkirk Gulch. Nice south ridge route on this one from 11,000' to loop the 12ers or if one wanted a little longer day than the standard ascent from the pass.
With the future in-laws.
Boreas Pass is open to the top, nice outing, weather was interesting, try to summit Bald as well, but 1000 ft before summit after 2-3 thunders we turn around, coming back for this for sure.
Highest winter ascent to date (age 9).
Shaylee and Kimberly stayed behind at the Section House, while Kessler and I went for a climb of 13,082’ (3987 meter) Boreas Mountain. We had left our snowshoes at the hut, but it was evident that this was a mistake since we were potholing on the lower slopes.
As we climbed higher and higher, the wind got stronger and was an estimated 40-50 mph up high, with a few gusts of 60 mph. It was quite cold, but not too extreme considering that we were up at 13,000 feet in January.
The summit area of the mountain was quite interesting with a long, flat and shallow valley on top of the mountain. We made our way to the SE part of the massif where it was obvious that the highest summit was located.
It was sunny, but very windy and Kessler had trouble standing up in the high winds. It had taken us three hours to reach the summit. We hunkered down and lay down in the wind shelter on top to eat our lunch. The views were fantastic and we could see all the way to Pikes Peak on the east, Quandary, Lincoln, Bross, and all the Tenmile Range on the west (Quandary Peak is especially impressive from this angle), all the way to the Crestones on the South and all the way to the Gore Range on the north. Regrettable, we had left our camera home on this trip.
After lunch we descended the mountain. We slid down the snow part way and were moving very quickly. It only took us an hour to descend to the Section House where we met Kimberly and Shaylee.
We hiked up Boreas Mountain first and then over to Bald for a full day. Great views from up there.
Hiked with my flatlander parents and our dogs. We enjoyed the great views and wildflowers. No wind at the top, but the rain rolled in on our way down. We had the mountain to ourselves, but the parking lot was packed on our return.
the main attraction of my day, the 13er boreas. hiked the gentle west slopes with sarah, dominic and dwight after scooting up madonna dome, a local 12er. the winter winds made an appearence up high....and blew my mind toward thoughts of the utah desert.
10/31/09 - Was able to drive almost 4 miles past the Boreas Pass winter closure gate. Hiked the rest of the way to the pass and climbed Boreas Mountain from there.
1/20/19 - Started at the winter gate on the west end of the Boreas Pass Road. Hiked to the pass and then to the summit. Windy, sunny day. 16 miles RT.
Very interesting mining evidence up near the summit...
Both every year from 82-86ish, then again in 07.
Wife, dog and I. Climbed with Bald.
