Setup camp near Forest Lake and went up at 7pm to enjoy the clear weather and nearly full moon. Four hours round trip on snowshoes with alternating heavy and thin snow conditions.

Snowshoed from 89. Summited at 9pm and snowboarded down by using only the light from the full moon. Camped at Forest lake.

NE ridge scramble  Sucess!

had a nice autumn alpine outing on the NE ridge of Brokeoff. Class 3 from the ridge extending towards Diller Pk. Choss-a-rific!

2nd mountain of the day  Sucess!

Combined with Lassen summiting these two in a day makes for a respectable little bit of hiking. Fewer people on this peak, and the views were better (at least this hazy day). This peak made the 350 mile drive worth the investment.

opps  Sucess!

When the young, cute, ranger smiled at our (single) friend and asked us what we had climbed, I replied: Brokeback mountain.

Great ramble  Sucess!

Great hike! Having done Lassen Peak four times previously, this hike is every bit as spectacular, and infinitely more enjoyable. As opposed to interminable switchbacks, this trail has forest, meadows, trees, and excellent trail the whole way. The first people I met on the trail, was on my way off the summit!

Trail  Sucess!

With my son. A fun hike. Nice views of Lassen and the Brokeoff summit for lots of the trail. Very windy on top, gusts to 40 mph, but not cold at all. Up in 1:45, down in 1:05. Recommended.

Brokeoff Mtn. Trail  Sucess!

Celebrating my birthday weekend. Nothing like bagging a county highpoint with the wife. A very cool hike, prefer this peak over Lassen.

Trail  Sucess!

A nice hike to the summit. A lot more fun than Lassen Peak, more wildlife and a nice swim at Forest Lake on the way down, and nobody on the trail. Realized there is enough time to climb Lassen and Brokeoff in the same day.

Beautiful  Sucess!

I recommend Lassen in the morning before it gets crowded (i.e. 9am) and Tahama after lunch although bring lots of water the first couple miles in the forest were hot. Definitely appreciated the diversity of scenery and vegetation (vs Lassen).

Brokeoff Mt Trail  Sucess!

Solo. Nice hike, but f'in hot. Stopped and took a nap in the shade. I wanted to traverse to Mt Lassen, but couldn't find a safe place to descend to the ridge. Hitched hiked back to Summit L campgrounds.

South Slope  Sucess!

A quick day hike with Rick Kent. Snow all the way from the SW entrance parking lot. Rick had snowshoes and I didn't = some postholing. Still we made up & down in 3 hrs or so. Killer view down the north face of Brokeoff.

brokeoff mountian trail  Sucess!

Enjoy great views without the crowded summit. The meadows and alder groves on the way up are lovely.

north ridge  Sucess!

did this in winter several years ago and is a fine climb. found very old pitons in the rock. also saw pitons to the west on the face under the summit.

north face , winter  Sucess!

the year may have been earlier, but I finally found a nutty partner to join me on a line I had been scouting for years. We did it in Febuary and it was a fine alpine climb of AI2, WI3, 5.6. very unstable rock, expect manky belays. Surmounting the cornice at the top was the grand finish! leave enough rope to get you past the fracture line to belay the 2nd! it was about 30 ft back when we did it. another variation to our left was climbed the following season by a different party.
