Brown Daddy-Long-Legs (Phalangium Opilio)

Brown Daddy-Long-Legs (Phalangium Opilio)

A Brown Daddy-Long-Legs (Phalangium Opilio) basks in the sun at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch near Tishomingo, OK. Count the legs. Spider, right? Even though these fellows have four pair of legs, they are not true spiders. They are members of the order Opiliones. It is often said that the daddy-long-legs are the most venomous "spider", but that they're not a threat to humans because their jaws are too small to bite us. This isn't true, as anyone who watches the popular TV show "MythBusters" is sure to know (they're not venomous, and though they won't usually bite, they can be made to do so!). Imaged in June 2003.
