Before visiting Kneiff we drove up Buurgplaatz as well. Met some people partying at the top - a wedding party?

BeNeLux giants Part III  Sucess!

Recent survey indicates that nearby Kneiff is Luxembourg's highest point but we visited Buurgplatz nonetheless, just in case an eventual re-measuring happens to put it back on top spot. Stranger things have happened.

A hike of about 30 feet...  Sucess!

Not much to say. The drive from Brussels was the toughest part.

Making sure  Sucess!

Before going off to for a few days of hiking in Luxembourg, I read that some sources claimed Buurgplaatz as the highest point, others Kneiff. According to my topographical map, Luxembourg Nord, dated 2000, Buurgplaatz was 559m and Kneiff 558m.

I'm not really after country high points, but if I'm in the area anyway, I like to visit them. So, to make sure I went to the right one, I just visited both - Kneiff on May 19, 2007, Buurgplaatz the day after.

It's a few years later now, and although many sources on the web still proclaim Buurgplaatz to be the HP of Luxembourg, I'm convinced by now that it is Kneiff. What clinched it for me is this article on the site of the Luxembourg topographical service.

Country HP nmbr 2!  Sucess!

Showing my friend how silly highpointing can be, we drove from Kaiserslautern, Germany, thru a little part of Belgium, and to the highpoint. Cool view ans nice scenery. Went over to the nearby hill Kneiff, which is a another contender for the highpoint of the country.

A rainy and cold day in northern Luxemburg. Not a big mountain, but the highest place of a European country..

After a mere stroll up Vaalserberg and the bus up to Botrange, surely Buurgplaatz would form a small but decent hike. Arriving from Troisponts in Belgium on a cheap fare train (I didn't know that you had to be Under 26 to get the cheap fare), discovered that the Youth Hostel was closed but the pub was open. A few pints and a somewhat chilly night on the bench outside the station.

Early next morning an empty bus left the station and remained empty until it dropped me at the roadhead to the Buurgplaatz. Rain dropped as I climbed the road and before I could say "Buurgplaatz" I was there. A few photos of the tower from the fields full of flowers and then a quick retreat - catching the same bus on its return leg - still empty!
