when doing this 2 or so weeks ago, the standard gate allowing motorized (or even foot) access to the standard 'parking area' was closed (as well as any kind of access) due to raptor nesting. I found the simple solution to be a trail, starting at the far end of Selby campground, that goes steeply up the hillside above camp to eventually meet up with the road. Taking a left on the road & going for a brief while leads to the parking area & standard start. I estimate that this alternate start adds maybe another 4 or so miles round trip & 500-1000' vertical.
