Canyon de Chelly Classic

Canyon de Chelly Classic

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "De Shay") was established in 1931 as a National Monument encompassing three major canyons. The steep stained walls preserve ancient ruins of the once-thriving Anasazi Indians. Navajo people still live within the monument. When bands of Navajo first arrived in the Southwest, the Anasazi pueblos in Canyon de Chelly were deserted ruins. By 1600, the Navajo had become seminomadic farmers. A century later, they were known for their sheep, blankets of finely woven wool and fields of corn. The canyon is 1,000 feet deep with massive walls of de Chilly sandstone. Large parts of these walls are covered with desert varnish. Early Native Americans would chip off the varnish and carve pictures on the rock called petroglyphs. Sp-member Sarah Simon has an excellent ALBUM on this unique area. This painting comes from a rare postcard from an unknown artist. Please note: Canyon de Chelly has no conventional roads. Sandy washes that are often the beds of flowing streams serve as major thoroughfares. Un-maintained trails often cut across wooded regions. (Knowledgeable guides are essential when visiting Canyon de Chelly).

Nice Painting

It might be an early painting by Delano, but I couldn't find a signature. He did many paintings of the Navajos.
You might think about attaching this to the "Mountain Art" album.
Peace, Jim

Re: Nice Painting

Thanks, Jim! I didn't know who's album to
attach it to. I know that Sarah Simon has an
excellent ALBUM on Canyon de Chelly.
This artist 'Delano' sounds familiar - I need
to do some research on the Web. Peace.

Re: Nice Painting

Yes, it could very well be Gerard Curtis
Delano, who hails from the east coast, BTW.

Thanks again! I'm gonna have to start referring
to YOU as "Quick-Draw Jim." :))
