Central Lake Bed with Reservoir

Central Lake Bed with Reservoir

When the Sutter Buttes were formed 1.5 million years ago, a ring of ash domes grew up where the present-day andesite domes are today. These ash domes eroded rapidly in the 200 to 300 inches off percipitation per year rainfall of the pleocine ice-ages. Quickly a lake formed within the center of the ash domes, and just as quickly the lake filled with debris. Now the sedimentary layers of the ancient lake are a mountain in the center of the Sutter Buttes. To see this fascinating geological feature, sign up for a Yuba Historical Society hike by phoning 530-741-0509.

cool

great photos of the Buttes. I did one of these organized hikes when I was 7, I'd like to go again sometime. Is there any organized hike or group that goes up to the summit of South Butte? I ask this because S. Butte is the highest point in Sutter County, and is highly sought after because of its being on private property.
