Training Run  Sucess!

We ran up the South Loop and came down Trail Canyon. I think my total moving time was about 4 hrs. Super high winds on the top, probably pushing 60mph gusts, so it was nice to get off the top and headed back down.

South Loop / Little Falls Canyon Route  Sucess!

Day 4 of my AZ/NV HP trip. South Loop TH / Cathedral Rock Picnic area was closed so I started up Cath Rock trail & took a wrong turn at the junction with SL trail. This trail led me past one spring and to a second where the main trail abruptly stopped and a steep use trail started up the east side of the ridge west of Mazie Canyon. About 500' up there is one mildly confusing spot where the game trail is more prominent than the use trail, but game trails traverse and rarely climb so just go up and you'll regain the use trail which is well ducked and leads you through 3 cliff bands to the top of the ridge just above the main SL trail. This 'path' that I found on accident gains about 2400' in 1.5 miles, but saves about 3 miles and is far more interesting.

Enjoyed the bristlecones, meadows, summit views and plane wreckage. Tagged Griffith on the way back down the SL trail. Great trip overall!

GF working, I'm playing  Sucess!

The girlfriend had to spend a week at the Bellagio so I came out to play. Did the SL up and the NL down. I was surprised at the amount of contouring and how much time you get to spend up high on this loop. Took 8 hours and 15 minutes car to car with Griffith added in. I followed a blood trail almost all the way down the NL. Someone lost a lot of blood and it looked fairly recent.

East Face Snow Climb  Sucess!

A fantastic snow climb (slogging up my waist is FUN???) up the east face with a great group of people. Almost no wind at the top, as if we were meant to be there. Sierra views.

South-to-north loop  Sucess!

It was a nice area, and a fun stop on a long drive. The summit was disappointingly trashed with various instruments, though, and super-windy.

via South Loop  Sucess!

Nice. Eight hours round trip for a Charleston/Griffith double. The visibility was mind boggling. I would swear I saw views from the Mt. Whitney massif (past Telescope peak) into Utah. I would take at least three liters of water per person on this one. makes a very nice map of the Spring Mountains that seems much better that the official USFS map of the area. Have fun!

Re: via South Loop

Were you the person I chased all the way up the South Loop?
(if so, we were on the summit together)

Escape From Vegas  Sucess!

Climbed via the south loop. Found this 18 mile hike to be much easier than anticipated. All the climbing is front-loaded into the first 4 miles or so, leaving the rest of the hike an easy ridge walk to the summit. Interesting remains of a top-secret plane crash dating from 11/17/55 near the summit. The plane was carrying scientists working on the U2 spy plane project to Area 51 when it crashed in a blizzard. The government denied it's existence for many years.

Conquered  Sucess!

South Loop Trailhead route.. 3 hours up and 2.1 hours down. Trailhead 7700ft. Peak 11900+ ft. Had a great time!!! What an amazing day. I originally headed up to Mt. Charleston from the Las Vegas area thinking I would do a 2 mile hike.. Found the South Loop trail and motivated myself to make the journey up the peak... I originally only had 15 oz. of water with me and that's it! As I ascended and my water was depleating rapidly I ran into another pair of hikers headed up to Giffith Peak, and I told them my intentions.. They saw I only had about 5 oz. of water left and gave me another 16 oz. of water! What a nice gesture.. I told them, at approx. 10,000ft and heading up, that now I was determined to make it to the peak!! After more rationing with the liquids, I made it to the peak, and found a half gallon water jug sitting under the flag at the peak, that had approx. 10oz. of water left in it. I filled up my small water bottle and headed back down the mt. after taking in some amazing views!! If your planning on doing this hike.. I would highly sugguest bringing at least 3 liters of water. I had no nutrition or food for 6 hours, and my body was feeling that!! Have fun!! Aaron Brown

South Loop Trail  Sucess!

We had a beautiful day for this hike. Had the summit to ourselves and the weather was perfect. We stayed on top for about an hour just enjoying the wonderful day. Did Hayford the next day.

Up the South Loop and Down the North Loop  Sucess!

My roommate Dave, his cousin JT, and myself all reached the summit on 10/16/08. Unfortunately, we got a late start and ended up descending the North Loop to Trail Canyon in the dark with one flashlight. Even so it was a total blast and I can't wait for March to attempt a snowy summit!

South Loop up North Loop down  Sucess!

All of last weekend's snow is melted off the trail. It was cold at the summit, about 40 degrees with a chilling wind. My friend Ron placed a US and a Nevada flag on the summit.
