So ... Bill ?This was a natural catastrophe? Kind of reminds me of what's been going on in California - over the past several years. Especially on the east and south sides of Yosemite Nat'l Park. Incredible landslide !!!
Mount Rainier has a lot of them, too. Meltwater collects beneath some of the glaciers, then it cascades down some of the drainages on the west side of the mountain.

Re: So ... Bill ?It was due to a 100" snowfall on Long's Peak that started on St. Patricks Day 2003. Down here on the plains, where I live, it was only about a 36" snow. But it was so wet and heavy that it was enough to collapse many roofs, including the one at my place of work.
That meltwater thing you're referring to has a Icelandic name which I can't remember how to spell. There's a wikapedia (not sure how to spell that either) link to it on my Elkhart Park TH page. Thinking the scientific term is GLOF (glacial lake outburst flood).
