Christian Almer…

Grindelwald cemetery Christian Almer is considered one of the best guides during the Golden Age of mountaineering. He was employed by men as Wills, Moore, Stephen, Whymper and Coolidge. Almer did many first ascents including the Eiger by the west flank 1858. Being seventy years old 1896, Almer and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding together with one daughter and two sons by ascending the Wetterhorn. Christian Almer was born Mars 29, 1826 and died quietly on 17 May, 1898. More reading: Clark, Ronald W.: The Early Alpine Guides, Phoenix House, London, 1949.
