Climbing together again for...

Climbing together again for...

Climbing together again for the first time since their first ascent of Monument Peak in 1978, two of Washington climbing's most important historical figures on the Thornton Lakes Trail on December 23, 2004...

John Roper chats with Fred Beckey (seated) while Ian Mackay--a fairly prolific climber himself--looks on. John has more first ascents in the Cascades than anyone, and perhaps more first ascents than anyone in the entire U.S., and no one in the state has climbed to more summits (2,500+). And Fred, well, what more do I need to say?

Interesting trivia: John and Fred share the same birthday, January 14, though Fred is 21 years John's senior (or 23 years depending on which Beckey Guide you've got).

Re: so did you ask?

Yeah, I asked him (not on this outing but a few weeks earlier at a slideshow).

He said and I misquote, "Tell that Radek fool it doesn't belong. What's he think I am, an Oregonian? That's the shnizzle. Werd up, yo!".

Actually, you'd be amazed at how grumpy he usually is. The three of us were getting a good chuckle out of his curmudgeon demeanor. And since Fred is hard of hearing, we got those chuckles in the car ride home with him sitting right there in the front passenger seat.

More winter Triumph shots coming to arouse you. Please stand by....

Re: so did you ask?

If it makes you feel better I climbed two more peaks today in not-so-nice weather: BlowGoats Mountain & Sufferfest Mountain, otherwise known as Goat Mountain and "Big Kid" in this photo.

Stefan and I are going to claim a FA of "Kid." And if not that, certainly a FWA.

Re: so did you ask?

Sorry, no other pics of FWB. He quit the climb where this photo was taken. I had intended to take others that day, but they were not to be. I know John took some shots of Fred gearing up at the trailhead.
