South Crater  Sucess!

Did South Crater with friends. So much fun hucking that entire thing going down, felt like dune frolicking. Awesome views. Great outing. Will return for Crater Mtn someday.

From the West  Sucess!

Great views after a steep and sandy climb.

From the east  Sucess!

Went from the east, same track as Bob Burd. This was not as bad as expected, I'd say we were able to walk on pine needles for 75% of the ascent. Those stopped the sand from sliding in the very steep uphill. When we couldn't find pine needles the going was much tougher.

The summit area is really interesting, very flat with a few small rock piles (100 feet or so). On descent we went straight down the sand, avoiding the pine needles. That was great fun, super fast and easy way down.

Snow capped peaks  Sucess!

I hiked Crater Mt and South Crater from the east on Thanksgiving. Enjoyed dramatic views of a cloudy and snow capped Sierra.

Fabulous views  Sucess!

Took my sons Stephen and Christopher and nephews Rand and Finnley with their dog Oreo. Hit the summit 10 minutes before sunset -- the crystal clear air and evening light gave us fabulous views of the entire Mono basin along with the eastern Sierra mountains -- Dunderberg to Morrison -- and the White mountains to the southeast. Unfortunately a bitterly cold wind did not allow us to linger.

Drove up the dirt road to within a mile of the summit, some 1,500' elevation gain, but on steep sandy slopes -- took just over an hour to climb.

Via north slope  Sucess!

Climbed with Maianh. Due to heavy snow fall in Sierras, made last minute decision to climb this peak. Snow last 500 ft. Some of the best summit views I've seen. Only 3 people signed summit log that year. Found summit log dated from 1966 - which I wrapped in a plastic sandwich bag to help preserve.

Route Climbed: Crater Mountain Pumice Scree Slog Date Climbed: 17 July, 2005  Sucess!

Started out @ 12.20 from the car, fearing I'd get back & not be able to extricate the rental car from the sand trap. Went up the steep cinder slopes with much effort, sweating like a pig the whole way.

Summited @ 13.52 (enjoyed scrambling up the subpeak & summit block!) & enjoyed the bountiful views of Mono Lake, the Tioga Pass-area Eastern Sierra, & the Great Basin. Left somewhat prematurely as threatening clouds were floating overhead. Got down to the relative safety of one of the false summits & enjoyed a sandwich, beer, & smoke, & taking the view in some more (felt safer than previously up on the summit). Left subpeak ~14.55.

Got back to the car at 15.49 and removed car from trap after much patience, throttle control, and praying. Went to Whoa Nelli & enjoyed a mango margarita under a warm Eastern Sierra sun. Great day, & glad to finally have done this!
