Nice snow hike up the ridge between snowstorms. We drove the Plush cutoff road to McDowell Creek Road, and then on to a clearing at 6500 feet where conditions became too muddy to drive any further. From there we walked a rough 4x4 track to the base of the peak and then a direct ascent up the northeast ridge. The previous evenings blizzard left fresh snow for the entire ascent, around 1" at base and several inches up top, great hiking conditions!
Drove to the saddle between Crook and McDowell, during which Kyle said 'guess we have to turn around' twice. I miss the Land Cruiser we were in. Took 35 minutes to reach Crook Peak summit from car - so we climbed McDowell Peak, too.
After a loss of will power last year to ascend Crook on a traverse with Drake, Light, Twelvemile, and McDowell; it was a pleasant surprise to find this peak to be rather easy in comparison to our other climbs. Great view. A few bugs at the top, but the wind kept them at bay. You might try and find Fremont National Recreational Trail 160. It disappears in places, but is useful for ascending both ravines, and crossing behind McDowell.
