Winter scramble
Hiked up to the summit of Crown on a wintery but sunny day. Started at the bottom of "the cut" hike (old chairlift)in North Van, at the top of Skyline Drive. Brought snowshoes but didn't put them on. Crampons would have been useful at the top as it was icy. Was happy to have my ice axe. Great views and a lovely pint at Grouse headquarters afterwards!
The second time I was up I soloed up some really fun 4th class climbing onto the exposed ridge and then up to summit. from part about 10min past Crown Pass while traversing across rock field head up bluffs and cliffs picking your own route. There are some old bolts and pitons around to.
During my sabbatical in Vancouver in 2004, I climbed this solo. I took the bus and ferry from my house to Grouse Mountain, did the Grouse Grind and hoofed on over to Crown. The route was steeper than I anticipated, but I loved the view from the top. The summit cliffs were quite breathtaking! On the way down, I took the tram at Grouse Mountain.
My old stomping ground, where I learned many things about mountains and weather. Great to see it on this website. I've been up Crown so many times I can't even count them. Most memorable trip was during a snowstorm with zero visibility, solo, and I heard a loud "whomp" followed by a roar like thunder. I turned around and went back to the Grouse Nest for a beer.
Wonderful day out with Andrej & Sarah. Took my favourite alternate route up Grouse (hate the crowds on the Grind). Still a bit of snow between Dam & Crown. I suspect there would have been more in a heavier snow year. This year the rock scrambles were nice & clear.
It was alot fo fun to return to the very first true peak I ever scaled. It had been six long years and this time the weather was far more friendly. The mountain still impressed itself upon me with its size and aestheitc appeal. A helluva day in the coast mountains.

The first time I summited Crown was with a good friend. We climbed it in ratty old Nikes, toting gym bags slung onto our backs like makeshift packs. We were woefully unprepared. We spent the night on the shoulder near the eastern end where the temps plummeted to -20 or so in the night, the spring tent wasn't cutting it. Overall it was a great experience though, one I wouldn't exchange for anything. I was much happier being there than attending the commencement ceremony back in Ontario.
The second time I was far more prepared and gained the summit after losing my way for a few minutes as I descended to the valley floor from Dam. It was a beautiful day and the views of downtown Vancouver were excellent. I enjoyed the little waterfalls that cascaded down the peak, they were great for wetting the hair and re-filling my water bottle.
A great rugged peak, well worth the time invested to get there.

Crown MountainGrouse Grind up to the lodge then followed the standard trail all the way to the summit. 5,400 feet of elevation gain made for tiring day.
