Darkwoods Violet (Viola orbiculata)

Darkwoods Violet (Viola orbiculata)

Also known as round-leaved violet, this species is found from low to upper elevations in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies and adjacent Canada. It often grows in very dark woods where few other plants grow and can bloom very early, often within days of snow melt. This photo is from the Lochsa River, Idaho. April 1999.
