Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant)

Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant)

Deer fern is common in moist forests and swamps from Alaska south to northern California. It generally is found along the coast or the adjacent coast ranges. It also occurs in forests with a maritime climate in north Idaho where it is very rare. Note the dimorphic fronds. The tall reproductive fronds rise from the center and are very dissected in linear segments. In the west, this is unique among the larger ferns. This photo taken near Elk River Idaho.
