Devil's Kitchen on Mt. Hood
Plumes of noxious steam rise from the Devil's Kitchen near Crater Rock on Mt. Hood. Like the breath of a giant hibernating bear, a disgusting smell of rotten eggs and sulfur dioxide wafts through the calm air . Simmering volcanic heat keeps the snow melted off the sulfur-stained rocks and makes climbers wonder how dormant this volcano really is. At the upper left, bergschrund crevasses split the top of the Hogsback.
