Long but beautiful day. Doubled up with Jack's peak. Total mileage - 17. Total time - 11.5 hours.
Climbed with Janine Peak. The last couple hundred feet on the way to Dicks Pass had some snow, so it was tricky to follow, but the snow has melted considerably in the past couple weeks.
Day hiked from the Bay View trail. Some snow still present heading to Dick's Pass. Excellent views of Pyramid Peak from the summit!
Added Jacks and Maggies for a little longer day.
Snowshoed from Eagle Falls trailhead. Very windy up there, but the wind scoured faces made for safe conditions and good cramponing. Not a soul in sight. Plenty of powder still out there.
Snowshoed in from Eagle Falls trailhead... and had the place to myself all day. Up the middle of the North Face to Dicks Peak, then followed the ridge out to Jacks Peak. Very cold, windy, and cloudy, but scenic. Had a clear view of Mount Diablo even.
A few friends, my dog and I spent the night on top of Dicks. We brought a telescope and stayed up all night and watched the Russians(USSR at the time)and Americans hook up in space. We could actually tell which craft was Soviet(roundish and green tinted) and which was American(white and cone shaped). Gerald Ford was President, Top Ramen noodles were the most exciting and revolutionary thing in backpacking and my girl friend was getting ready to dump me because I was spending too much time in the Sierras. That's the truth.
This was a fun solo traverse of some major peaks in desolation wilderness. Started and finished at Lake of the Woods.
A nice solo day from Fallen Leaf Lake via Dicks Pass.
I really enjoyed the day I hiked up Dicks from Glen Alpine. Some really fine views of the area. I wish I could find my pictures from that day, it was almost 20 years ago.
Clear and windy. Great panorama of the desolation wilderness.
Traverse from Heather Lake to Dicks Pass out out of Glen Alpine.
Nice clear warm fall day.
2x for Dicks, first time up Jacks
Pics are here.
Fun scrambling up the ridge. Came down the scree which was fun.
Long day hike starting from Bayview TH, up the NE Ridge of Dicks then traversed down S Ridge and up N Ridge of Jacks. Outside of people on the busy trails, only encountered one person on the traverse of the two peaks (on summit of Dicks) - very unusual for Desolation. Then traversed talus fields under east faces of Jacks and Dicks back to Dicks Pass. Beautiful day and great views!
Nice summer outing from the Bayview Trailhead.
Little bit of snow left on the trail to the pass.
Dog and a guy on a cell phone on the summit.
Massive horde (~25 people) were headed up when I was heading back.
Think everyone mistook this for Tallac.
Stopped and tagged both teats of Maggie's Peaks on the return.
Pics are here.
Dayhike from Glen Alpine TH. After climbing Mt. Tallac traversed the ridge to Dicks Pk. Continued on to Jacks Pk and then Pyramid Pk before returning to the car which made for a very long day in a great area which I hadn't visited yet.
Continued to small lake below and followed drainage to big lake can't remember name of...very beautiful
My favorite wilderness in California! Did a day hike to Dick's for the 4th of July. We took a 'short cut' through the slabs of rocks - do I recommend it? No, it was treacherous. Views were definitely rewarding though! :)
Nice dayhike with some funky ice in places and some cool frozen lakes along the way. Sick views from the top and never saw a soul all day.
Probably the best views in all of Desolation Wilderness. This summit is well worth the effort.
